The Palace Museum
Established in 1925, the Palace Museum is a large comprehensive national museum mainly displaying the imperial palaces (the Forbidden City) of the Ming and Qing dynasties and the former imperial collection of cultural relics. Its main exhibition contents include the imperial palace complex, ancient artworks and the historical remains of imperial culture.
Its collection includes the largest and most complete wooden-structured palace complex in the world and the former imperial treasures left over from the Ming and Qing dynasties. Since then, through national allocations, solicitations from society and private donations, the Palace Museum's collection has been greatly enriched, forming a rich collection of more than 1.86 million precious cultural relics in series in the fields of ancient paintings and calligraphy, ancient artifacts, imperial cultural relics, books and archives. In 1961, with the approval of the State Council, the Forbidden City was designated as one of the first batch of national key cultural relics protection units.
In 1987, the Forbidden City was listed in the "World Heritage" list by UNESCO.
