The zheng is an ancient Chinese plucked instrument that was popular in the Qin region during the Warring States period and has a long history of two thousand years, so it is also called the guzheng. With its complex and ever-changing finger techniques, beautiful and melodious timbre, magnificent and gentle rhythms, and flowing artistic conception, the guzheng is deeply loved by the people, appealing to both refined and popular tastes and possessing infinite charm.
The diversity of guzheng playing methods is also unmatched by other ethnic musical instruments. In terms of playing methods, the right-hand finger techniques include tuopi, gou ti, mo da, yaozhi, payin, huazhi, guazou, etc., while the left hand is used for up and down gliding and pressing tones, dotting the strings, vibrating the strings, kneading the strings, and back gliding. These finger techniques are sometimes interspersed with plucking, and there is also playing with both hands in cooperation, which greatly enriches the expressiveness of guzheng music.
